#1 Reason Why Trainers Struggle

Hey guys! It's Jono here today. How was your weekend? Mine, was really chilled - it gave me a chance to really do some thinking about the sales conference I went to last week! One thing that really ran home was being a "specialist" - everyone at this conference that was super successful was a specialist at one particular area. It reminded me of when I started in the industry. So, I'll tell a little story.

When I first started in the industry I worked behind a desk at a very small gym (couple hundred members) and at this gym were 5 Personal Trainers who were all VERY successful (except one). At the time, I just thought it was normal, but after 10 years in the industry I know WHY they were successful, they were really good at ONE thing.

Trainer 1: Amateur body builder... So knew EVERYTHING about resistance training
Trainer 2: Amateur boxer... So knew EVERYTHING about boxing technique and drills
Trainer 3: Amateur triathlete... So knew EVERYTHING about running, swimming and riding
Trainer 4: Women's Health Specialist... So knew EVERYTHING about women's health and everything that comes with it
Trainer 5: Generalist... Knew a little bit about everything

Can you guess which trainer wasn't successful? The "generalist". Anyone who wanted to do weights would go with Trainer 1, anyone wanted to box would go with Trainer 2, anyone who wanted to do cardio / fun runs would go with Trainer 3, anyone wanted to train with someone who knew about women's health would go with Trainer 4. Trainer 5 had no point of difference! Not saying Trainer 5 wasn't a good trainer, he actually was. He probably was the 2nd or 3rd most knowledgeable in each of those areas, but had nothing specific to stand out on!

From there, I realised I needed to become a specialist in something. My passion was always "outdoor bootcamps" so I dedicated all my life and study to running the best bootcamps in the world!

In terms of where to start, I knew I had to master the outdoor bootcamp equipment (suspension training, kettlebells, battleropes, medballs and powerbags). If you're interested in getting more insight into running successful bootcamps, click here to get 5 Tips to Grow your Bootcamp for FREE
