The number 1 Adult Exercise Pre Screening Tool in Australia is the APSS (Adult Pre-exercise Screening System).
Fitness professionals and business owners in Australia are well aware of the risks associated with prescribing exercise and the need for consistent standards of professional practice in the health and fitness industry.
Pre-exercise screening is used to identify individuals who may have medical conditions that increase their risk of adverse events during physical activity/exercise. It serves as a filter or "safety net" to determine whether the potential benefits of exercise outweigh the risks for a particular person.
Previously, every Fitness Facility / Personal Trainer would use their own version of a pre screening tool, however in 2010, three national organizations - AUSActive, Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA), and Sports Medicine Australia (SMA) - standardized the way pre-exercise screening is conducted in the Australian health and fitness industry.
They developed the Australian adult pre-exercise screening system (APSS), which provides an evidence-based approach for identifying and managing health risks related to exercise.
In 2019, a revised version of the APSS was released, including a revised tool and user guide. These latest versions can be downloaded below via the AUSactive website.
Pre Exercise Screening for Young People
Sports Medicine Australia (SMA), Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA), and AusActive recently introduced the Pre-Exercise Screening System for Young People (PSS-YP).
The PSS-YP is a variation of the Adult Pre-Exercise Screening System, as the existing system did not adequately assess the distinct potential risks for children and young people. It is intended to improve the identification of risk and provide client education and management.
This new system includes screening tools for both parents and young people, as well as a user guide, and is designed to minimize the risk of injuries associated with participating in exercise and physical activity for this age group.
As the younger generation becomes more active in health and fitness facilities and outdoor exercise programs, the PSS-YP can be a valuable resource for businesses and fitness professionals looking to deliver high-quality, safe, and age-relevant exercise programs.
The content of the tool is based on the latest available evidence and is accompanied by a user guide that explains terms and processes for use. These latest versions can be downloaded below via the AUSactive website.
Note: If you are looking to train children, you will need the following qualifications for insurance purposes
Pre Exercise Screening During Pregnancy

In Summary, the Adult Pre-exercise Screening System (APSS) is the number one pre-exercise screening tool for adults in Australia. The Pre-Exercise Screening System for Young People (PSS-YP) is a variation of the APSS specifically designed for children and young people, and also includes screening tools and a user guide. AUSactive does not currently have a pre-screening tool for pregnant or postnatal women, but provides guidelines and other resources on physical activity and exercise during pregnancy.
