About ESSA

Who are ESSA?

Founded in 1991 Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA), formerly known as the Australian Association for Exercise and Sports Science (AAESS), is a professional organisation which is committed to establishing, promoting and defending the career paths of tertiary trained exercise and sports science practitioners.

Who are ESSA Accredited Professionals

ESSA accredited professionals are degree qualified exercise professionals and can be recognised under the following accreditation types:
- Accredited Exercise Scientists (AES) – use exercise to improve health, well-being and fitness
- Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEP) – use exercise to help manage chronic conditions, disability and injuries
- Accredited Sports Scientists (ASpS) – use exercise to improve sporting performance
- Accredited High Performance Managers (AHPM) – manage a range of performance services for elite sport

What are ESSA CPD points?

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. An hour of continuing professional development counts as one CPD point. Therefore a 10 hour online CPD course would give the student 10 CPD points. CPD points may also be known as CECs (continuing education credits), CEUs (continuing education units) or PDPs (Professional Development Points).

How many CPD points do I need per year to keep my ESSA accreditation?

Currently, you are required to complete 20 CPD points every year to maintain your ESSA accreditation. This is regardless of whether you are an AES, AEP or ASpS. 15 of these CPD points must come from Further Education.

What activities count towards ESSA CPDs?

The most common way to get ESSA CPD points is by completing an approved ESSA CPD course, however there are many other options including and not limited to industry conferences, business professional development and industry professional development.
