The Certificate IV in Nutrition Coaching (11396NAT) is a nationally recognised qualification you can finish online, at your own pace, within 12 months. It's $1,997 upfront, or $54 a week over 52 weeks, which totals $2,808. It covers 11 units, and there's no work placement to organise.

FEO Academy (RTO #45428) delivers it, and you get one assessor from start to finish. It suits beginners and career changers as much as personal trainers and coaches: you don't need a fitness qualification or existing clients to start, and you'll learn to talk about food confidently without stepping outside your scope.

What you'll learn

You start with the nutrition science, covering macronutrients, micronutrients and energy balance. The rest of the course is about coaching: screening clients, running assessments, and helping people change habits they've had for years. Three of the eleven units are business units, so you also learn how to charge for the work.

By the end you'll be able to

  • Design and deliver tailored nutrition programs
  • Screen and assess clients, and support behaviour change
  • Apply the science to fat loss, muscle gain, health and performance
  • Adapt plans for different populations, including women's needs
  • Give in-scope meal and supplementation guidance
  • Build and run a coaching business, online or face to face

What you can and can't do as a nutrition coach

This is the question we get asked most often, so here it is in plain terms.

What you're qualified to do

  • Run nutrition consultations and client assessments
  • Create and sell general and personalised meal plans
  • Coach clients in person or fully online, anywhere
  • Charge for ongoing coaching and accountability
  • Work alongside PTs, dietitians and wellness professionals

What sits outside your scope

  • Clinical treatment of diagnosed medical conditions
  • Medical nutrition therapy, which is a dietitian's remit
  • Prescribing supplements to treat a medical condition
  • Using the title "Nutritionist" per ABS ANZSCO 251112
This qualification makes you a Nutrition Coach. It does not make you a Nutritionist or a dietitian, and it isn't intended to. It's the level that lets you work with paying clients on food, habits and body composition without going through a three-year degree first. If you're a personal trainer weighing this up, we've set out what personal trainers can and can't advise on without it.

Studying online shouldn't mean studying alone

The hardest part of a self-paced course isn't the content, it's staying at it when nobody's expecting you on a Tuesday night. Here's what you get to stop that happening.

One designated assessor

The same assessor marks your work for the whole course, so you're not re-explaining yourself to whoever picks up the ticket.

  • Questions answered within one business day
  • Assessments marked within two business days
  • Clear guidance on what each assessment is asking for
20,000+ members

The private Facebook group

Past, present and future students, plus tutors. It's the fastest place to get an answer, and the easiest way to see what the job actually looks like before you're doing it.

  • Ask questions and get answers from tutors and other students
  • Real conversations from people already working in the industry
  • Somewhere to stay accountable when motivation dips
Free, live, optional

Free monthly webinars

A live webinar once a month on a different industry topic, think nutrition, business, coaching, or training, with a guest expert from that field.

  • A new topic each month
  • Hear from industry experts
  • Completely optional, no attendance expected
7-day cooling-off period

Seven days to change your mind

Your enrolment includes a $250 deposit, which covers administration and is retained if you withdraw. If you decide within seven days that the course isn't for you, let us know and everything you've paid beyond that deposit is refunded.

  • Seven days from enrolment to decide
  • The $250 deposit is retained, the rest is refunded

How you'll study theory, assessment, practical
1

Work through the theory

The content comes as video lectures, an online textbook and audiobooks. It's the same material in three formats, so you can read it at a desk or listen to it on the drive to work.

2

Complete your assessments

Multiple choice questions, case studies and short answer questions, based on how you'd handle the situation with a client.

3

Practise with real people

You complete a set number of practical tasks with practice clients. Friends or family are fine. There are no fixed practical hours and no work placement to organise.

4

Graduate and start coaching

Most students finish well inside the 12 month limit. Some get through in a few months if they've got the time.

What jobs can you get with a Certificate IV in Nutrition Coaching?

The formal career outcome is Nutrition Coach. In practice that covers a fair bit of ground, and most graduates end up doing two or three of these at once.

Nutrition Coach

Gyms, studios, wellness clinics, health centres

Run consultations and assessments, write meal plans, and check in with clients face to face. This is where most graduates start, usually inside a gym they already work at.

Online Nutrition Coach

Remote, with your own client base

Coach over video calls and digital programs. You're not limited to clients who can get to you, which is why one of the units covers online customer service.

Personal Trainer who coaches nutrition

Added to an existing PT business

If you already train clients, this is usually the quickest return. Nutrition questions come up constantly in PT sessions, and at the moment you're either answering them for free or referring them on.

Group program & challenge coach

Bootcamps, studios, online communities

Run six or eight week nutrition challenges for a group rather than one client at a time. It's a common way to take on more people without adding more hours.

Corporate wellness coach

Workplace health and wellbeing programs

Deliver nutrition workshops and staff coaching for employers, usually contracted per program rather than per client.

Your own coaching business

Self-employed

Three of the eleven units cover the business side: investigating opportunities, selling, and online customer service. They're there because a lot of graduates go out on their own.

A note on titles

You'll be qualified to work as a Nutrition Coach. This qualification does not make you a Nutritionist or a dietitian, and it isn't a pathway into clinical practice. See what sits inside and outside your scope for the detail.

Graduates can also register with industry bodies such as AUSactive, Physical Activity Australia or FITREC on the strength of their fitness qualifications.

Certificate IV in Nutrition Coaching: questions people ask before enrolling

Is this the same as being a dietitian?
No. This is a coaching-level qualification. You'll offer general nutrition advice, education and support. Clinical treatment and medical nutrition therapy sit with dietitians. It also doesn't qualify you as a Nutritionist under ABS ANZSCO code 251112.
Can I coach clients online?
Yes. The course prepares you to coach both in person and over video, and one of the units covers online customer service specifically.
Can I sell meal plans?
Yes. After completing a client assessment, you can create and sell both general and personalised meal plans aligned with your client's goals.
Do I need insurance to start working?
Yes. On graduation we recommend obtaining professional indemnity and public liability insurance before you take paying clients.
How long does the Certificate IV in Nutrition Coaching take?
You have 12 months to complete the course, however because it is fully self-paced and online, the honest answer depends on the hours you can give it. People with a couple of free evenings a week tend to finish comfortably inside the year, and some get through in a few months.
Do you need a fitness qualification first?
No. You can start with no fitness background, and plenty of students do. If you already hold a Certificate IV in Fitness, this sits straight on top of it, and if you'd like to add personal training later, the Certificate III & IV in Fitness pairs well with it. You can see how the whole thing fits together across our fitness qualifications.
How much does a nutrition coach get paid in Australia?
It varies more than any single figure suggests. Some graduates build a standalone nutrition coaching business; others add it to personal training or another health role and charge more per client. What you earn depends on how many clients you see and how you package your services. We've broken the numbers down in our guide to what personal trainers earn.
Is a Certificate IV in Nutrition Coaching worth it?
Yes, if you want to give clients real answers about food instead of deflecting. You finish able to run a nutrition consultation, build and sell meal plans, and handle the questions that come up mid-session about protein, portion sizes, supplements and fat loss. Just as importantly, you'll know exactly where your scope ends, so you can speak confidently without guessing or overstepping. Three of the eleven units cover the business side, so it's a qualification you can charge for, not just one you hold.
What if I enrol and change my mind?
Let us know within seven days of enrolling and everything you've paid is refunded, apart from the $250 deposit, which covers administration and is retained. You don't need to give a reason.
