Frequenty Asked Questions (FAQs)
What qualifications do I need to train seniors in fitness?
To become a qualified Seniors Fitness Instructor, you must hold a Certificate III or IV in Fitness. To work specifically with older adults, AUSactive requires additional training, such as the nationally recognised SISFFIT014 – Instruct exercise to older clients with managed conditions or an equivalent seniors fitness course. This ensures you are qualified to deliver safe, effective sessions for clients aged 60 and above.
What’s the difference between CPD seniors’ fitness courses and the SISFFIT unit?
- CPD (Continuing Professional Development) courses — such as our Training Older Adults Level 1 & 2 — are designed to upskill qualified fitness professionals by expanding their knowledge of working with older adults.
- The SISFFIT014 unit is a nationally recognised qualification from the Fitness Training Package. It is specifically accepted by AUSactive and required by many insurance providers for trainers working with seniors.
Do I need insurance to work with seniors?
Yes. Most fitness insurance providers include cover for training older clients if you hold a Certificate III or IV in Fitness and list it on your policy. Some may also require completion of a CPD course or the SISFFIT014 unit to be fully insured for working with the elderly.
Will my insurance cover me with only CPD courses?
Some insurance companies do recognise CPD training in seniors’ fitness, while others require the nationally recognised SISFFIT014 unit. Always confirm your policy details to ensure full insurance coverage when working with older populations.
Why is fitness important for seniors?
Exercise for older adults is vital to support mobility, balance, strength, cardiovascular health, bone density, and overall independence. It also helps prevent falls, manage chronic health conditions like diabetes or arthritis, and supports better mental wellbeing and cognitive function.
A well-designed seniors fitness program can improve quality of life and reduce the need for medical intervention.
Do seniors need pre-exercise screening?
Yes. It is essential to complete a pre-exercise health screening using the Adult Pre-Exercise Screening System (APSS) recommended by AUSactive. If any risk factors are identified or if your client has a medical condition, you may need to refer them to their GP or allied health professional before beginning an exercise program.
Can I train seniors with medical conditions?
Yes, provided the condition is managed and within your scope of practice. For high-risk or complex medical conditions, you should work collaboratively with the client’s GP or allied health team. This ensures safety and compliance with industry guidelines for training special populations.
What supervision ratio should I follow?
Always maintain a group size that allows you to monitor each participant’s form, fatigue, mobility, and technique closely. Seniors require higher levels of supervision to reduce injury risk, support balance, and ensure safe progression through exercises.
What safety certifications do I need?
You must hold up-to-date First Aid and CPR certificates. These are mandatory for all fitness professionals working with older adults, as they ensure you are prepared to respond in emergency situations during exercise sessions.
What exercise equipment is safe for seniors?
Use equipment that supports balance, safety, and joint health. This may include:
Resistance bands
Light dumbbells
Bodyweight exercises
Chairs or benches
Balance aids or stability tools
Avoid heavy gym machinery unless properly modified or supervised.
How should outdoor sessions be managed?
Outdoor exercise for older adults can be beneficial, but safety must come first. Choose flat, shaded areas, avoid slippery or uneven surfaces, and schedule sessions during cooler times of the day. Ensure clients stay hydrated and avoid excessive heat or humidity, which can increase the risk of heat stress or dehydration.
How much exercise should seniors do?
According to Australian National Guidelines, older adults should aim for:
At least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week
Two sessions of resistance training focusing on major muscle groups
This helps maintain strength, balance, and independence in daily life.
Can seniors do strength training?
Absolutely. Strength and resistance training is one of the most important types of exercise for seniors. It helps improve muscle mass, bone health, joint function, and prevents falls. Start with light resistance and progress gradually, always focusing on safe, controlled movements.
What are the best types of exercises for seniors?
Effective activities for seniors include:
Balance and fall-prevention training
Strength/resistance workouts
Mobility and flexibility exercises
Low-impact cardiovascular training (e.g., walking, cycling, swimming)
Functional fitness movements (mimicking daily tasks)
These improve both physical capacity and confidence.
How should exercise intensity be monitored for seniors?
Use the RPE scale (Rate of Perceived Exertion) or the “talk test” to ensure exercise remains at a safe, manageable level. Avoid high-intensity workouts unless the client has progressed to that level under supervision.
Can seniors join a gym program?
Yes, provided the program is supervised, personalised, and designed for seniors’ fitness needs. Many gyms now offer senior-specific classes or personal training, which focus on safety, progress, and enjoyment.
How can I build rapport with senior clients?
Take time to understand their medical history, life experience, and personal goals. Use clear, respectful communication and design supportive, empowering programs that enhance confidence and independence.
Can exercise help with seniors’ mental health?
Yes — regular physical activity reduces stress, boosts mood, improves sleep, and supports cognitive health. It also reduces feelings of loneliness or social isolation, which are common in older populations.
I don’t have a Certificate III or IV in Fitness but want to train seniors — what should I do?
You must first complete your Certificate III and/or IV in Fitness, which are the minimum industry qualifications required to work as a personal trainer in Australia. Once qualified, you can specialise in seniors fitness through CPD courses or the SISFFIT014 unit.

Testimonials
Bex Lock was an extremely knowledgeable presenter who made the course both interesting and easy to understand. I particularly appreciated how she connected the science to practical applications for working with clients, which is especially valuable for Personal Trainers and health and fitness professionals.
As a Pilates Teacher and Personal Trainer, I found the course fantastic and gained a much greater understanding of the digestive system and the role of the gut microbiome.
I would highly recommend this course to anyone wanting to expand their knowledge of gut health and learn how to apply this information in a practical way when working with clients.
The content is friendly, engaging, and well structured, with none of the clunkiness I experienced with other providers. I am also completing the Older Adult Population CEC modules and enjoying those as well.
I really enjoyed the course and found it practical, easy to follow and very relevant to what we do as fitness professionals. Even after many years in the industry, it was a great refresher and reminded me how important the small details are when it comes to exercise technique, movement and coaching clients properly.
I’d definitely recommend this course to both newer trainers and experienced fitness professionals. There’s always something to learn or improve on, and I found the course genuinely worthwhile.
